Two upcoming films tackle the topic of ignorance and prejudice towards trans people. Eddie Redamayne's film, The Danish Girl, is set at the turn of the 20th centuary whilst Naomi Watts and Elle Fanning star in About Ray, based in modern-day New York.
The film The Danish Girl tells the story of artist Einar Wegener who undergoes gender reassignment in the early 1900s to become Lili Elbe.
The actor, who won an Oscar for playing Stephen Hawking, will bring trans issues to the big screen and hopefully promote discussion and greater understanding.
Another current film also tackling the subject but from a very different perspective is About Ray. After Ray decides to transition from female to male, Ray's mother, Maggie must come to terms with the decision whilst tracking down Ray's biological father, to get his legal consent.
